2016 WASHINGTON D.C. 48 Hour Film Project

The 48 Hour Film Project (48HFP) which was conceived by Mark Ruppert and Liz Langston in Washington, D.C. in 2001 and now is presented in 130 cities and on six continents, held it’s annual 48HFP in Washington, D.C., April 29 through May 1, 2016. Teams form in advance of each city’s 48 HFP and during the Friday of each competition, there is a launch party held about 7:00 p.m. where each team leader draws a genre out of a hat. Then all teams receive the same character/s, line of dialogue and prop that must be used in the film. Immediately following the launch, the team’s writer/s write a short script to be filmed by the team. Film may not be longer than 7 minutes. Teams must turn in their completed films by Sunday at 7:30 p.m. It’s a dash to write, cast, rehearse, shoot and edit a film and submit it by the deadline.

48hrSarah Olscamp, producer for Team We Have This asked me to write a script for the team’s production. At the launch party in Washington, D.C., Sarah drew Horror as the team’s genre. She called me in Jacksonville, FL, and gave me the genre, character/s, line of dialogue and prop. I wrote a five page script in about 90 minutes and sent it to the team. By that time the team had assembled its cast and rehearsed the script. On Saturday, the team shot all the footage needed to tell the horror story called Finding Claire and editing occurred on Sunday. Team leader, Sarah Olscamp said they turned in the film an hour and a half before the deadline. Many times it’s a race to the deadline by teams so submission with so much time left is admirable.

Finding Claire is a story about a boy (Johnathan Newport) who is scouting the woods looking for his sister Claire (Anna Maria Shockey). He does find her, yet she is unrecognizable. She tells her brother a secret but is interrupted by a malevolent man (Dallas White) and the boy tries to flee.

Directed by Jeremy Norris, the film was shot in the same park where Team We Have This shot their 2015 Washington, D.C., 48 HFP short called Keeper of the Groove.
